Senior Internships

Senior Internship is in full swing! I realize there may be some questions parents have regarding internship, and how it may have changed from last year. These questions make for a great opportunity to open up a conversation with your child about internship; it’s refreshing to open a discussion and watch the “I don’t know’s” turn into a very clear idea of where the student would like to take his or her internship. The seniors haven’t stopped impressing me with their creative ideas; we’ve embraced the challenge that many don’t yet know what they want to “be” when they grow up, but all have expressed a passion for SOMETHING. We’ve been taking these interests and creating plans of success for internship placement; I am excited students are wholeheartedly making internship a relevant and meaningful experience.

The goal of the internship program is to provide students with meaningful real-life experiences through relevant career exploration. In the three weeks school has been in session, I have had more than 20 students utilizing their Google calendar app to request a meeting and discuss their ideas for a relevant and meaningful experience; I have also held more 43 impromptu drop-in meetings with your students to discuss internship- success!

This year’s program was initiated with your student(s) at the end of their junior year, and the information given to your student is the same as when it was delivered by Ms. Hamler (whew!). Students have been kept up to date on internship through e-mails, Echo, and of course, lots of face time with me. The due dates, criteria and deliverables are all the same as originally set up by Ms. Hamler. You may have even noticed some of the paperwork still refers to Ms. Hamler! The entire course was migrated over within Echo for this reason; to ensure consistency and ease in transition.

I have been meeting with students on a regular basis, and based on the success of our first assignment, I am confident our seniors are aware of the requirements and are on board. If opening up a conversation with your student doesn’t give you the clarity you are seeking, please feel free to contact me by telephone or e-mail. Although my responsibilities are district-wide, your students have already seen firsthand the dedication I have to the New Tech High internship program, and I will make myself available to the extent it is needed to ensure success for your senior student.

I look forward to a great year with your seniors!
