Friday February 7th, I held an optional session C with internship information for juniors. I was pleasantly surprised when more than 40 students showed up! We discussed New Tech's prerequisites for internship (20 hours of community service, 10 hours of school service and completion of their junior year digital portfolio), and the process of the program.
It seemed some students wanted to start ASAP, while a few planned to complete their internship over the summer. The majority of students thought they would wait until senior year (when it is required for New Tech). I asked how many students thought they would be able to fit a 50 hours internship right now into their junior year schedule. One hand came halfway up. We discussed how senior year was going to even busier with testing, college classes, senior project, college applications, scholarships etc. I hope by the end of the session, your student was inspired to complete his/her internship over the summer at the very least!
The NVUSD Internship Program also has a new website! It is a bit of a work in progress, but I hope to have it fully functional in the next two weeks. This website will allow businesses to submit their interest in becoming a mentor, and find out more information about the program. The website will also have a password protected page students can access to view current internship opportunities- I am quite excited about this! Please visit: NVUSDInternship.webs.com to view!
